ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) among the elderly at ages of 65 years and older in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province from 2017 to 2021, so as to provide the evidence for the development of PTB prevention and control measures in the elderly. @*Methods@#Data of PTB cases at ages of 65 years and older in Yangzhou City from 2017 to 2021 were collected from the Tuberculosis Management Information System of the Chinese Disease Control and Prevention Information System, including age, gender, current address, population classification and diagnosis classification. Descriptive epidemiological methods were used to analyze the temporal distribution, regional distribution, population distribution and delay in healthcare-seeking of PTB cases.@*Results@#A total of 3 283 PTB patients at ages of 65 years and older were registered in Yangzhou City from 2017 to 2021, accounting for 41.12% of the total number of PTB cases. The incidence decreased from 112.10/105 to 66.03/105 (P<0.05), with an average annual incidence of 80.43/105. There were 1 236 cases of PTB cases from April to July, accounting for 37.65%. Guangling District had the highest annual incidence of 96.45/105, followed by Hanjiang District (89.29/105) and Jiangdu district (87.05/105). The average annual incidence of PTB in males was 134.07/105, which was higher than that in females (30.55/105, P<0.05). There were 1 070 cases of PTB cases at ages of 65-69 years, accounting for 32.59%. The highest incidence was seen in men at ages of 85 years and older (200.39/105) and in women at ages of 80-84 years (38.34/105). Farmers were the predominant occupation of PTB cases (2 488 cases, 75.78%). There were 2 365 cases of PTB with delay in healthcare-seeking, accounting for 72.04%.@* Conclusions @#The incidence of PTB in the elderly at ages of 65 years and older in Yangzhou City showed an overall downward trend from 2017 to 2021, peaked from April to July, and was higher in Guangling District, Hanjiang District and Jiangdu District. Males and farmers had higher risks of PTB.

ABSTRACT

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a common acute and severe disease in clinical practice. Staphylococcal EnterotoxinB (SEB) is a superantigen that can cause inflammatory ALI. MiR-222 has been demonstrated to be upregulatedin SEB-induced inflammatory ALI, but its exact roles and functions remain ill-defined. In this study, SEBexposure led to inflammatory ALI and high expression of miR-222 in model mice and lung infiltratingmononuclear cells, but the inflammatory response and high expression of miR-222 were restored in miR-222-/-mice. Moreover, we investigated the roles of miR-222 in vitro and observed that the concentrations ofinflammatory cytokines and the expression of miR-222 were all elevated in SEB-activated splenocytes andmiR-222 inhibition reversed the effects. Foxo3 was confirmed as a direct target of miR-222. Interestingly, SEBexposure led to a decrease of Foxo3 expression, and Foxo3 knockdown partially reversed the promotion ofFoxo3 and the inhibition of inflammatory cytokines induced by miR-222 inhibitor in SEB-activated splenocytes. Our data indicated that miR-222 inhibition could alleviate SEB-induced inflammatory ALI by directlytargeting Foxo3, shedding light on the potential therapeutic of miR-222 for SEB-induced inflammation in thelung.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the results of tuberculin skin test (PPD) in preschool children after the vaccination of BCG, and to analyze the effect of BCG vaccination on latent tuberculosis infection in children.@*Methods@#From January to November 2018, a total of 1 359 preschool children from 14 kindergartens in 8 districts and cities of Jiangsu Province were selected for tuberculin test(PPD), and chest X-ray examination was performed on children with strong PPD results.@*Results@#The positive rate of PPD in preschool children in Jiangsu Province was 23.33%, of which strong positive and moderate positive (PPD≥10 mm) were totaled 6.47%. There were 149 boys (21.29%) with PPD positive reactions and 168 girls(25.50%) with PPD positive reactions, and differences of PPD positive reactions with different genders were of no statistical significance (χ2=3.36, P>0.05) And there were 201 children (25.35%) with PPD positive reactions in northern Jiangsu, 116 children (20.50%) with PPD positive reactions in southern Jiangsu. There were significant differences in the results of PPD positive and negative reactions between different regions(χ2=4.35, P<0.05). There was 1 case of PPD positive reactions among 3-year-old children(0.71%), 19 cases among 4-year-old children(3.89%), 31 cases among 5-year-old children(8.96%), and 37 cases among 6-year-old children(9.63%), and the differences of PPD positive reactions of different age groups were of statistical significance(χ2=21.69, P<0.01).@*Conclusion@#The positive rate of PPD in preschool children in Jiangsu Province is very low, indicating that PPD can be used as a detection method for latent infection in children. The overall positive rate of PPD in preschool children in Jiangsu Province is also low, and appropriate measures should be taken to protect susceptible children and effectively prevent and control childhood tuberculosis.
